Gleaning Program

Gleaning Regions

Lamoille Valley
Salvation Farms (the precursor to the Vermont Foodbank gleaning program) was founded in Lamoille Valley, and originally only served this community. This successful gleaning operation has been stabilized through investments of the Vermont Foodbank, as well as the hard work of volunteers and staff.  The region will serve as a model for the Vermont Foodbank gleaning program as it expands statewide.

Capital Region
Farms andvolunteers are being recruited to become valuable participants in this regions gleaning effort.  The first few gleaning seasons will set the stage for years to come.  Developments will proceed with caution, ensuring that we 1) can provide our farmers with exceptional service, 2) are performing with consistent competence, and 3) leading volunteer gleaners in an efficient and effective manner, all while demanding minimal support from each participating farm.

Greater Brattleboro Area

The Vermont Foodbank's gleaning programs sucessful expantion into southeastern Vermont has been made possible through a partnership with the Brattleboro community organizing initiative Post Oil Solutions (POS). One aspect of the POS mission involves food security initiatives that, among other local foods related projects, provides locally-grown food to low-income individuals.

The  Vermont Foodbank will work closely with Post Oil Solutions to expand gleaning in the region and ensure access to fresh fruits and vegetables among Vermonters-in-need.

Burlington Area

Through a partnership with the Intervale Center's Gleaning Project, the Foodbank is able to expand its gleaning program into the Burlington area. The Intervale Center is a Burlington non-profit with a mission to develop farm- and land-based enterprises that generate economic and social opportunity while protecting natural resources.

This partnership will increase the volume of fresh produce available to emergency food sites, senior and youth centers, and other organizations feeding the food insecure within the greater Burlington area.

With a successful model developed over the course of eight seasons, the Intervale Center's Gleaning Project brings a wealth of practical experience and insight to the Vermont Foodbank gleaning program. Combined with the current resources of the Foodbank, we expect this partnership to both sustain and expand gleaning efforts within the Intervale and beyond.
