Food for Thought
BARRE TOWN - Hunger has been on the minds of some seventh-graders at Barre Town Middle and Elementary School lately, which explains why they'll be hosting a daylong benefit for the Vermont Foodbank this weekend. Let's back up.
Seems the 15 seventh-graders enrolled in the school's "problem solving though literature" class have been learning about hunger in Vermont in general and the needs of the nearby Vermont Foodbank in particular. Inspired by some of the troubling statistics they discovered, the students decided to raise money for the Foodbank by organizing and hosting the outdoor family fun day that will be held at the school on Saturday.
You're invited!
We're told the entrepreneurial students have secured a "bounce house," arranged a petting zoo, lined up few face painters and are planning food, games and more as part of their community service project. Proceeds from the event, which will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday on the recreation fields behind the school, will benefit the Foodbank located across the road in the Wilson Industrial Park.
