Vermont Food Bank Counts on Cyclists
Nearly 300 bicyclists will be hitting the road Saturday-- riding across Vermont to raise money for the Vermont Food Bank.
The seventh annual Point-to-Point bike ride is the food bank's biggest one-day fundraiser of the year. Cyclists can pedal 25, 50 or 110 miles -- the longest starts in Williston, taking riders almost across the entire state. All of them end with a celebration at the Harpoon Brewery in Windsor.
Last year, the ride raised $36,000 with just 180 cyclists. This year, even more people have signed on.
"We're getting a whole new crowd involved in the fight against hunger," said Judith Stermer of the Vermont Foodbank, who said the bike ride raised awareness as well as money. "We're reaching areas of the state where they may not come to an event in Burlington, but they're seeing riders coming down their street on the day of the ride which makes a huge difference for us."
