Author to speak at St. Michael's on hunger in America
COLCHESTER -- Author Dr. J. Larry Brown will give a lecture titled "Hunger in America: The Invisible Epidemic" at 7 p.m., Sept. 9 in the McCarthy Arts Center at St. Michael's College
Free and open to the public, the lecture is presented by the SMC Edmundite Center for Peace and Justice and co-sponsored by the SMC MOVE Office. Doug O’Brien, executive director of the Vermont Food Bank will respond to Dr. Brown’s presentation.
Brown described as the leading scholarly authority on domestic hunger, will address the following questions:
-- Why has hunger re-surfaced again after being essentially eliminated in the late 1970’s?
-- Why doesn’t America end hunger like other developed countries have?
-- Who are the people going hungry?
Brown, director of the National Center on Hunger and Poverty, Brown is on the faculty of the Harvard School of Public Health. He chaired the Harvard-based Physicians Task Force on Hunger in America, among other major initiatives. He is the author of "Hunger in America: The Growing Epidemic and Living Hungry in America," and has appeared on Nightline, The Today Show, and Good Morning America.
