Food Stamp Challenge issued
Apr. 19--Have you ever been curious as to what it is like to live on food stamps? Now is your chance to find out and help feed your local community in the process.
The Yolo County Food Bank is inaugurating its first virtual fundraiser: The Food Stamp Challenge.
To participate, all people have to do is commit to eating on $4 a day for five days and donate what they'll be saving on food to the Yolo County Food Bank (suggested $25 donation).
The first challenge week starts Monday and goes to Friday, April 24. People can also have friends, coworkers, or family members sponsor you for each day you eat on a food stamp budget, much like people might in a walkathon.
The "Food Stamp Challenge" seeks to do three things: highlight what it is like to eat on the average food stamp benefit -- approximately $1.33 per meal; help the Food Bank raise money to assist in its efforts to feed the hungry and alleviate malnutrition in Yolo County; and offer an easy do-it-yourself opportunity for anyone to get involved in doing a virtual fund raiser for the Food Bank.
The number of Yolo County residents enrolled in food stamps has increased up to 25 percent from 2007, with over half of those enrolled being children.
To register or make a donation, go www.foodbankyc.org/fscreg.htm, or for information on food stamps, go to: www.foodbankyc.org/pdfs/fsc-toolkit.pdf.
People can also contact the Food Bank at 666-0690.
