Canstruction returns for another year at the University Mall in Burlington

Barre – Canstruction® is a design competition, created by the Society for Design Administration, which uses canned food as the building blocks for creative sculptures. Competing teams, led by architects, highlight their talents by building giant sculptures made entirely of canned food.

Presented by TD Banknorth, a major sponsor, and hosted by the efforts of the AIA Vermont (American Institute of Architects, Vermont Chapter), Canstruction® came to Vermont for the first time in November of 2005.  The event was a huge success, raising over 10,000 pounds of food for the Vermont Foodbank.

This year’s event will be held at the University Mall beginning on Saturday, October 20th.  The public is invited to view the exhibits and vote on their favorites. At 6 p.m. there will be an awards ceremony acknowledging the designers and builders in a number or categories. Each sculpture uses about 3,000 cans of food, which will ultimately be donated to the Vermont Foodbank. This year, there will be 10 teams participating in the Canstruction competition.

AIA Vermont Executive Director Hanne Williams stated, “The executive committee of AIA Vermont endorsed the proposal of “Canstruction” unanimously.  They viewed it as a wonderful opportunity for architects and members of the design community to assemble creative teams to construct something unique out of cans, certainly a different medium for them, which would later be well used by the Vermont Foodbank.  We are thrilled to be planning our 3rd Annual Canstruction!”

Of the event, Vermont Foodbank CEO Douglas O’Brien says, “The Vermont Foodbank is delighted to be part of ‘Canstruction,’ the annual showcase of local talent, creativity, engineering and design.  We at the Foodbank are grateful for the efforts of the Vermont Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the competing teams whose imaginative efforts will help us give a hand-up to more needy people in the Green Mountain state.”
