DETAILS:    Four Vermont Foodbank tractor trailers will load up and carry off approximately 34,000 pounds - or 17 tons – of food from the former Hannaford Supermarket on South Main Street in Rutland as the grocer celebrates the relocation and grand opening of its new store location just down the road. Hannaford and Vermont Foodbank representatives will meet at the former Hannaford store, located at 241 South Main Street, to load all of the fresh produce, bakery, deli, meat and seafood items from the old store on to trucks to be donated to the Vermont Foodbank.  The donated items will be distributed to the Vermont Foodbank’s 270 network partners: food shelves, food pantries, senior centers, shelters and after-school programs that assist 66,000 Vermonters each year. As the donated food items are loaded on to trucks, the new, expanded Hannaford Supermarket at 318 South Main Street will celebrate its grand opening. The new store will have expanded products lines and departments, including a larger selection of meat, produce and deli; natural and organic foods; a small breakfast café featuring breakfast, lunch and dinner items; an expanded floral department; and an expanded selection of health and beauty aids; plus self-scan registers for self-checkout. The new store will employ 205 full- and part-time workers, an increase of 12 percent over the former location.  Hannaford Bros. Co., based in Scarborough, Maine, operates 165 stores under the Hannaford Supermarket and Hannaford Supermarket and Pharmacy names. Hannaford stores feature Guiding Stars, America’s first storewide nutrition navigation system. Hannaford employs more than 27,000 associates. The company is owned by Delhaize Group of Brussels, Belgium. Additional information can be found at www.hannaford.com.
