Michael, who volunteers with the New School, comes to the Vermont Foodbank every Friday morning to help sort and pack food in the warehouse – and he is a treat to have around! Michael is a hard worker and is always friendly to everyone. He represents us well with his collection of Foodbank shirts and getting to see him is a great way to kick off our Fridays. Here’s a little more about our Friday volunteer, Michael Martin.

Michael MartinMichael, where are you from and where do you currently live?

Williamstown, Vermont.

Please tell us more about yourself (profession, hobbies, family, interests, etc.).

I like riding my bike, camping and riding my pedal cart. I also like to listen to the radio (99.9Bazz, Froggy, Frank FM, 92.9 WDEV). I also like Thunder Road Races, Red Box Baseball, Mountaineers, Norwich Hockey, Pittsburg Penguins, and Boston Bruins.

Tell us about your favorite food/meal/recipe.

I like macaroni and cheese with bacon, Chinese food from China Moon, punch bowl, taco salad and cake!

Michael MartinHow long have you been a volunteer with us?

Just over a year, about 14 months.

Describe the work that you do for the Vermont Foodbank.

I stock shelves, make boxes and fill them. I crush boxes. Sometimes I work with frozen meat, dry food, packing lunch boxes, moving pallets, and cleaning the workspace.

Why did you choose to volunteer with the Vermont Foodbank?

The school I go to helps place students in the workplace for work experience. I really like to wear Foodbank gear and represent the Vermont Foodbank!

What have you learned through your experience here?

I have learned to get the job done and have fun, listen to my boss, take appropriate breaks, work with coworkers, and have job satisfaction.

Was there ever anyone in your life who inspired you to give back or volunteer? And how did that have an impact on your life?

I have done a lot of volunteer work through school at places like Hubbard Park and NECI. I’ve also helped elderly people by clearing off their cars and stacking wood. It has been a good experience.

Michael MartinDescribe a favorite memory of your time volunteering with us.

My favorite memory is eating snack, but my favorite work memory is moving pallets.

Is there anything else you’d like to share?

I like working with my bosses, Rob and Nicole. They are nice and friendly.

Michael, we like working with you too. Thank you for donating your time and energy to the Vermont Foodbank!
