Hunger in America is a series of quadrennial studies that provide comprehensive demographic profiles of people seeking food assistanceHunger in America
through the charitable sector and an in-depth analysis of food banks around the country that provide this assistance. It is the largest study of its kind.

In 2014, the Vermont Foodbank released Hunger in America 2014—surveying more than 100 food shelves, meal sites, senior centers and shelters as well as more than 700 clients throughout Vermont.

Hunger in America 2014 also provided a detailed look at the state of  10 of Vermont’s counties. The study explores hunger and poverty in each county as well is services provided by food shelves and meal sites. The county level data provides a deep dive into the work being done in the towns and communities all around Vermont.

For the next few months, we will be exploring the county level data on the blog. This blog is focused on hunger in Chittenden County.

There are 34 Foodbank network partners in Chittenden County. The Vermont Foodbank and these agencies provide food to 9.4% of Chittenden’s population.

  • Population: 160,531
  • Poverty rate (2009-2013): 11.2%
  • 15,100 Chittenden residents visit a Foodbank network partner each year
  • 3% of Foodbank clients in Chittenden report having to choose between paying for food and paying for utilities.
