VPR writer and commentator Mary McCallum recently volunteered with the Black River Good Neighbors in Ludlow to deliver food to three neighbors in need.  It was a cold, rainy day, but what stuck with her most were the hidden stories of hunger in her community.  You can listen to her experience here:

VPR Commentator Series – McCallum: Feeding the Hungry

McCallum says, “…the diversity of households was striking: a young mother of two in an apartment in the center of town, a couple with small children living in a mobile home off a steep dirt road with an unplowed driveway, and a frail elderly widower who crept to the door with his walker.”

In Vermont:

  • 33% of the members of households served by The Vermont Foodbank are children under 18 years old
  • 6% of the members of households are elderly
  • 42% of clients served by The Vermont Foodbank report having to choose between paying for food and paying for utilities or heating fuel
