FAQ

The Foodbank expects minimal interruption of services, limited to actual move dates. The Barre facility will be closed to the public on 2/25 and 2/28 (in addition to March 1 for Town Meeting Day) to allow time for the final phase of the move and set-up at the temporary facility, 780 E. Barre Road, Barre, VTNetwork Partner pick-ups will be rescheduled for these days, and the main phone line will not be staffedOther activity outside of the Barre facility, such as distributions or deliveries, will still happen as scheduled without interruption. Services out of the Foodbank’s Brattleboro and Rutland locations will not be affected by the temporary move and closures of the Barre facility.

This renovation has been planned for over many years and was set to occur as the pandemic hit. This work was deferred during the last two years due to the pandemic.

The current facility in Barre, serving as headquarters for the organization and serving 65% of food distribution across the state for the organization, no longer accommodates the operational needs of the organization. The Barre distribution center was built in 2000 with a goal of handling 2 million pounds of food per year and about 20 employees. In 2020 the Foodbank distributed 19.6 million pounds of food, and in 2021 distributed 17.6 million pounds of food. The number of staff supporting this work has nearly doubled since 2000 as well.

The renovation will enable increased food distribution and programming to match the current and future needs of the mission of the Vermont Foodbank.

The renovation is being funded through a capital campaign that was completed prior to the pandemic. Funds were designated for the purpose of supporting this important capital investment.
