The State of Vermont offers fuel and utility assistance to help keep you warm and connected throughout heating season.

Fuel Assistance

This is a yearly, one-time benefit payment that can help you pay for fuel to heat your home. You can qualify for this program whether you heat with kerosene, oil, propane, electricity, wood, pellets, another fuel, or a combination. You could even qualify for this program if you pay your landlord for heat in the form of rent or additional payments. You can apply any time of year, though applying before the end of November can help you get the largest benefit. You can use this short application to apply for Fuel Assistance, or there is a longer online application on the main fuel assistance page if you’d like to apply for food and fuel assistance at the same time.

Weatherization Assistance Program

If you qualify for fuel assistance, you likely qualify for free weatherization improvements to your home. Weatherizing your home can help reduce the amount of fuel you need to use and keep your home warmer.

Wood Banks

There are several wood banks across Vermont that may be able to provide free or discounted wood.

Crisis Fuel

Your local community action agency can share more about the Crisis Fuel program and other help to heat your home.

Electric and Gas Company Discounts

Some electric and gas companies offer discounts. These discounts are different than fuel assistance and you could be eligible for both fuel assistance AND a discount through your electric or gas company. Here are some discount applications to look into: Green Mountain Power, Vermont Gas, Burlington Electric, and Washington Electric Cooperative, Inc.

Affordable Internet Service Programs

Many internet and phone service providers offer a discount for their services. This State of Vermont site lists many of the companies that offer discounts and links to each company’s website application.
