While getting food out into our Vermont communities is a core function of your Foodbank, we know that addressing the root causes of hunger is key to solving the issue. A place to see this work in action is in the kitchens at Capstone Community Action in Barre, and Feeding Chittenden in Burlington, where the Community Kitchen Academy (CKA) program has been training cooks since 2009.

In late summer of 2011, Viviana’s life changed almost instantly. She lost her small business. Then, Tropical Sorm Irene flooded her home. Out of work with a severely damaged home, she reached out to Capstone Community Action for help.

Chef Joey has taught professionally for 25+ years guiding students ranging from 6-65 years old on corporate, independent, institutional and amateur levels. As an instructor at the New England Culinary Institute for years, Chef Joey is proficient in teaching all levels of classic French cookery, current trends, and Haute cuisine. She is experienced in creating à la carte, school, institutional, seasonal, locavore, ethnic, vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free menus...plus so much more.

Training Cooks, Nourishing the Community

Eleven newly-minted cooks from around Central Vermont were awarded diplomas on Thursday in Barre’s Old Labor Hall. Before dozens of family members, friends, and community supporters who came out for the ceremony, the CKA graduates accepted their diplomas and then celebrated their achievement by feeding the crowd an exquisite buffet-style meal that included smoked pork ribs, loaded potato salad poppers, meatballs, and many more nutritious foods.
